CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) -- The University of Illinois is making a change to how returning students sign up for housing. Officials said the new system is more equitable for everyone.
University Housing Associate Director of Communications and Marketing Chris Axtman-Barker said the new system moves in phases, the first of which started on Oct. 20.
First, students had to notify the university that they plan to return to University Housing for the 2026-2027 school year. More students want to live in University Housing than there is space, so there's a cap on how many people can return.
Then, students who indicated they planned to return were entered into a random drawing to determine when, and if, they could choose their room.
