As food-centric holidays inch closer, the federal government’s suspension of SNAP has been a hot topic of conversation in the newscycle. Recently, a judge in Rhode Island ordered the Trump administration to fully fund SNAP for November.
But as high temperatures in the Portland-metro barely reach the mid-60s, thousands of Oregonians face a heatless winter for as long as the shutdown persists.
In Oregon and across the country, low-income families rely on money from a federally funded program to help pay for heating and cooling their homes.
Nearly 70,000 homes in Oregon benefited from the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) in 2024.
