For 100 minutes of intense playoff soccer, McDonogh boys sent wave after wave toward the Gilman goal, only to have the Greyhounds defense doggedly send everything back.
When Thursday’s Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference semifinal came down to penalty kicks, the game scoreless through the two 10-minute overtime periods, the No. 1 Eagles finally solved the stubborn puzzle.
After McDonogh’s Drew Goodrich opened the shootout with a successful take, the host Eagles got an early opening when Gilman standout Bashir Abou sent his try wide of the right post. For the Eagles, Javier Brown, Austin Roberts, goalie Teddy Kolasky and Val Quaranta followed with poised makes as McDonogh edged No. 7 Gilman in the shootout, 5-3, to advance to Sunday’s championship game.
