Laney boys soccer is right on track.

The Bucs (18-4-2) looked sharp in their first playoff game of 2025 , cruising past Wakefield 2-0 in Round 2 of the NCHSAA 8A East playoffs in Wilmington on Thursday, Nov. 6.

For many Laney players, it marked their first postseason win. The team graduated its top six scorers from last season, forcing several former junior varsity players into key roles this fall.

"I told them, 'A lot of you guys don't remember the last time we won a playoff game," Laney coach John Matrisciano said after the win. "I said, it's your turn to make a memory. They took the challenge and came out and played."

The Bucs weren't near the top of any preseason polls in August. After losing a senior-heavy class in 2024, even Laney players questioned how strong they could be.
