MACHIAS, Maine — Washington County voters appear to have rejected a bond that would have temporarily eased financial uncertainty in the region.
The county owes about $8 million to Machias Savings Bank and faces a $3 million budget deficit.
"There was no plan 'B' until we figured out the best option, which failed," County Manager Renee Gray said.
While most local leaders vouched for the bond solution, Rep. William Tuell fought against it.
"To use the football analogy, sometimes it's better to take a sack than to throw an interception," Tuell said.
The debt to Machias Savings Bank must be paid back by the end of the year, causing the budget advisory committee to scramble and consider cuts to public services.
