SALEM, Ore. — Oregon’s gun control law, Measure 114 , is back in the spotlight, this time before the state’s highest court.
Three years after voters narrowly approved it, the law still hasn’t taken effect. It’s been tied up in court since late 2022 , and Thursday’s arguments before the Oregon Supreme Court could decide its future.
Measure 114 would add new rules for gun ownership in Oregon. It requires a permit and safety training to buy a firearm, removes the three-day limit on waiting for background checks, and bans magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.
Those magazine restrictions were a big part of the debate in court.
“The way the technology operates now allowed the Las Vegas shooter to fire more than 100 rounds in a minute,” said Senior Assistant Attorney General Robert Koc
