WILKES-BARRE — City Council approved nearly a dozen LSA grant applications totaling over $3.5 million for various city improvement projects at Thursday’s combined work session and voting meeting.

One of the more expensive applications was for $841,295 to be used for the Horton Street Stormwater Infrastructure Improvements project.

Mayor George Brown said the money will go toward replacing an aging stormwater system that was also partially damaged when a massive sinkhole opened up in the road this past summer.

Another big project the city hopes to fund with LSA grant money is Phase II of the Wilkes-Barre Downtown Public Square Pathways Improvements project.

The application is for $904,760. This will include modifying the pathways around Public Square and replacing worn-out pavers.
