BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Captain Edgar Quincy Sloan served as a member of the Bakersfield Fire Department for over 30 years.

“My recent civil case was not only about me. It revealed the systematic issues that affect employee morale, recruitment and public confidence in city leadership," said Sloan at Wednesday's City council meeting.

In 2020, Sloan sued the department and city over accusations of racial discrimination and retaliation. Last week, a jury returned a verdict for Sloan for $700,000 after a nine-week trial.
