BUFFALO, Minn. — With a chance choice between overtime and the win, Ferugs Falls Hillcrest Lutheran opted for the latter.
The Comets defense stopped a potential game-tying, two-point conversion with no time remaining to secure a 40-38 win over Mabel-Canton in the Minnesota 9-player quarterfinals at Buffalo High School.
“That was a huge play,” said Hillcrest Lutheran head coach Korey Fry. “One of the things we’ve been preaching to our guys is not let one play beat you. When it mattered the most, our defense came up strong.”
Mabel-Canton mustered two touchdowns in the final four minutes of the game. Kale Tollefsud started the surge with a 5-yard touchdown run.
With four seconds to play in the game, Isaac Underbakke hauled in a 4-yard TD pass from Darian Hershberger to make it 40-38.
