New Haven police are planning to step up patrols downtown on big nights out — including Thanksgiving Eve and New Year’s Eve — after a deadly shooting early Saturday morning that happened when nearly 10,000 people were out celebrating Halloween.

Police Chief Karl Jacobson said the department is adjusting its downtown patrol strategy to better handle large crowds after one person was killed and three others were hurt during the Halloween night chaos.

“It is very frustrating because we saw what happened last year and we prepared,” Jacobson said. “We got ready for what happened last year.”
