Wooden crosses and poppies were planted in the annual Field of Remembrance at London's Westminster Abbey ahead of the UK's ceremonies to remember its wartime dead.

Visitors were able to view the display of hundreds of crosses each inscribed with a name of a fallen soldier from Thursday, and add their own dedicated to a loved one.

The Field of Remembrance has taken place every year since 1928, initially dedicated to those killed in World War I.

A service will be held at Westminster Abbey on Remembrance Sunday, this year falling on November 9, which also will mark 80 years since the end of World War II.
