PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - Neighborhood House, a southwest Portland food pantry, has seen a huge spike in demand over the last several days as hundreds of thousands of Oregonians wait for SNAP benefits to return.
The nonprofit said it expects to serve up to 3,500 people this November as people deal with the “SNAP gap.” It usually feeds about 2,000.
“We’re seeing every kind of person you could imagine, from working people to people who are houseless,” food security manager Jim Cooper said. “It’s heartbreaking on one hand. On the other hand, I’m glad that we’re here to do it, and I’m very happy the community is so involved.”
For Cooper, working at the pantry is a way to give back.
