Tucked into a back corner of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority complex at DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst, the William D. McDowell Observatory, at first glance, doesn’t seem all that special.
But on Wednesday nights, when the observatory staff opens the domed structure for the public to use its massive telescope to view the stars, it’s among the most unique opportunities in northern New Jersey.
Bob Laura, the observatory’s director, opens the facility year-round, weather permitting, for ages 10 and up. The hours vary by season but will be from 7:30 to 10 p.m. on Wednesdays in November and December.
The telescope has a 20-inch mirror, which Laura believes is the largest open to the public in the metropolitan area.
