Thousands of people are set to become exempt from council tax bills as a charity has secured pledges from 16 local authorities and is urging others to follow suit. Over 100,000 people pass away in poverty annually, and Marie Curie is striving to reduce this figure by encouraging councils to waive council tax charges for one specific group.
Sixteen councils have made commitments to scrap council tax for terminally ill residents so far. Manchester City Council and Barnsley have already implemented the policy, whilst Bristol, Salford and Preston have agreed to introduce it.
Marie Curie revealed that 11 further councils have committed to examining the introduction of a dedicated relief policy, including Newcastle, Wakefield, Wirral, Pendle, Newark and Sherwood, South Gloucestersh
