Doneghy, 75, has been asking Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin for Charleston to get public chess tables for six years. On Wednesday, he got his wish.

Four chess/checkers/backgammon tables have been set up at Slack Plaza. Players need to bring their own pieces. The project is the first from the mayor’s Hearts of our Neighborhood initiative.
