Farmers in more than 8 districts of Karnataka are demanding increased sugarcane prices

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking an urgent meeting to discuss the ongoing sugarcane farmers’ protest in North Karnataka.

Farmers in Belagavi, Bagalkot, Vijayapura, Vijayanagar, Bidar, Gadag, Hubli-Dharwad, and Haveri districts have been protesting for eight days, demanding ₹3,500 per tonne from sugar mills. However, mills are offering ₹3,200 per tonne, claiming higher prices would lead to heavy losses and debt.

Currently, 26 sugar mills in the state have shut operations. Farmers argue that under the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for 2025–26, ₹3,550 per tonne was fixed, but after deductions for harvesting and transport, they receive only ₹2,
