This week, like last, Flash from the Past stops the time machine in mid-20th century Kitchener.

Thanks to a gift of many photos from the estate of Bill Motz, we can enjoy a ringside seat in the 1950s and 1960s as Kitchener begins a period of unprecedented growth.

Bill Motz died in 2020 after spending many years working at the family newspaper, the Kitchener-Waterloo Record, later Waterloo Region Record. Away from the newsroom, Bill was seldom without his camera and thanks to these photos, we can recall some city history.

For now, the photos are in my collection but will soon be transferred to the Waterloo Historical Society’s archives at the Kitchener Public Library.

Today, let’s see how four 21st-century Kitchener tourist attractions looked six or seven decades ago.
