More than five weeks into the federal government shutdown − the longest continuous shutdown in history − 40 major U.S. airports are reducing their flights by 10% to account for the pressure placed on air traffic controllers who are not being paid.

Two of those major airports are within New York state. The reductions are set to begin today - Friday, Nov. 7.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced Wednesday that 40 major airports would see a 10% cut in flights starting Nov. 7, a direct result of the ongoing, record-breaking federal government shutdown. Both New York airports on the Federal Aviation Administration's reduction list are major hubs and in the New York City area - LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy International airports. The list was released on Thursday, Nov. 6.
