Not only is Phil Foden finally back in the England squad, but the Manchester City playmaker celebrated his recall by being told he could now challenge for the role he has always wanted for the Three Lions.

Foden's City renaissance has been one of the stories of the season and his classy double against Borussia Dortmund in midweek was another reminder of what a supreme footballer he is when at his very best.

Those goals made an England recall feel inevitable after he was one of several big names overlooked in October. Foden will now get the chance to press his claim for a World Cup berth in the dead rubber qualifying fixtures against Serbia and Albania.

Foden will also get an opportunity in the middle of the pitch rather than out wide. There is competition there for England
