PORTLAND, Ore. (KPTV) - A driver died early Friday morning after crashing into a utility pole while fleeing from police in southeast Portland.

The incident began around 3 a.m. when a Portland police officer saw two cars driving recklessly near Southeast 119th Avenue and Southeast Division Street. The officer tried to make a traffic stop, but both cars took off before officers turned on their emergency lights.

One of the cars was found crashed into a utility pole at Southeast 148th Avenue and Southeast Division Street. The driver was declared dead at the scene and was believed to be the only person inside the vehicle.

The other car and driver has not been located.

The intersection at Southeast 148th Avenue and Division Street was closed for the investigation.
