The University of Rhode Island hasn’t conducted a search for an athletic director in nearly two decades.

Thorr Bjorn was a stable figure in Kingston from his July 2007 hiring through his impending departure, which came in a surprise announcement Wednesday morning, Nov. 5.

Bjorn will leave the Rams on Nov. 29 for a return to his alma mater at the University of Massachusetts, accepting a role that will focus largely on reviving a struggling football program in Amherst. He leaves URI with a combined 40 league championships in the Atlantic 10 and Coastal Athletic Association, a host of facility upgrades completed and a handful more in the early stages.
