CHILLICOTHE ( 25News Now ) - November is Native American Heritage Month, and a mother-son team worked together Thursday night to share history and culture in Chillicothe.
One of the many stories they told at the public library was how the local indigenous community got their drum. Using money given in honor of a relative who died after serving in the military, they purchased a traditionally-made drum. Before making it, the artisan wanted to know everything about the people who would use it.
Jo Lakota and Jimmy Lakota Edwards are of Walla Walla and Lakota descent, but they also have Shawnee and Cherokee ancestors. They wanted to celebrate history, but also honor a living and active culture.
