Iwas recently rereading Ted Kerasote’s 1993 book “Bloodties”, which describes the ties that exists across hunters, even from diverse cultural backgrounds, and the ties that exists between us, the land, and the animals we share the world with. In the prologue, Kerasote describes his own journey through hunting and how “of many animals, I can ask no more than a photograph.”
I can relate to Kerasote’s message because for me hunting has been as much about the process; planning, being outside, friendships, ties with nature, and the actual hunt, as the outcome, the harvest. Armed with nothing more than a camera, I can fulfill most of my motivations for hunting including developing ties with the animals that I photograph that are in many ways even stronger than when I carry a rifle.
