MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Overcrowding remains an issue at the Shelby County Jail at 201 Poplar, though some relief appears to be on the way soon, as more than 300 detainees are set to be moved.
"We've just signed an agreement with the Tennessee State of Corrections to move out about 300 inmates as soon as the mayor signs off on it," Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner told FOX13 Wednesday, adding that the total population in the jail was pushing 3,000 when its capacity is 2,800.
He said that with the Memphis Safe Task Force making thousands of arrests, he asked for help from federal and state leaders for staffing to keep up with the arrests.
