Putting more money into a rent subsidy program would go a long way to addressing the housing crisis, a spokesperson for the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Legal Clinic says.
“It’s very clear to me, that in the short term, the best way forward for the municipality and the province is to put more money into rent subsidies for people with a low income,” said Ian Aitken, the clinic’s executive director. “It’s a great program that helps those with a low income get suitable housing, it takes them off the rent-geared-to-income list, helps landlords and the money remains in the community.”

The program helps low income people remain housed, off the streets and reduces pressure on policing and healthcare, Aitken said.
