The former Premier League footballer Joey Barton has been found guilty by a jury at Liverpool Crown Court of six counts of sending a grossly offensive electronic communication with the intent to cause distress or anxiety.

Joey Barton, once a midfielder for Manchester City, Everton and Newcastle, has been convicted of sending posts about the broadcaster Jeremy Vine and TV football commentators Lucy Ward and Eni Aluko .

A jury at Liverpool Crown Court found Barton, 43, had “crossed the line between free speech and a crime” with six posts he made on X, formerly Twitter, in which he compared Ward and Aluko to the serial killers Fred and Rose West, and described Vine as a “bike nonce.” New Feature
