STAUNTON, Ill. — A community is rallying around a man who was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Wednesday in Staunton, Illinois.

Ismael Ayuzo Sandoval, a business owner and father from Mexico, was taken into custody on Wednesday near Staunton Elementary School. He is being held at the Ste. Genevieve County Detention Center. The district's superintendent said Sandoval has two children in the district and he walks them to school every day.

On Wednesday morning, the superintendent confirms Sandoval was not arrested on school property or in front of the school, but rather a few blocks away.

The superintendent said this has never happened before and he's reminding staff of ICE procedures, as well as supporting the family.
