SAINT-IGNACE, Mich. — You can officially purchase sections of original steel grating from the Mackinac Bridge deck.
The Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) is using an online auction site to sell seven individual, identical pieces of grating.
The 60-year-old pieces of steel have some corrosion and section loss. Pieces are approximately 5.5 feet by 38 feet and 5 inches deep.
Each piece weighs about two tons.
The grating was originally coated with lead-based paint. While much of the paint is gone, the buyer will still have to sign a "Hold Harmless agreement" related to the lead paint and structural condition of the grating.
The MBA has agreed to cut the grating section into two shorter pieces for ease of shipping if the buyer chooses. The price of one cut is included in the bid. No other
