WATERBURY, CT (WFSB) - A student was taken into custody for allegedly bringing a firearm to a school in Waterbury, school officials said.

Police responded to the Waterbury Career Academy on Friday.

Superintendent Darren Schwartz said school resource officers responded and apprehended the student.

The school went into shelter in place mode, but it has since been lifted.

“A shelter in place was activated immediately after a WCA student was found to be carrying a firearm,” Schwartz said in a message to the school community. “The SRO and administration swiftly responded to this incident and isolated the student in question. The student is in custody of the Waterbury Police Department.”

The message was sent to parents just before 9:30 a.m.
