HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (WSAV) -- Fishermen off Hilton Head Island and Savannah got a treat this week when they spotted right whales Wednesday.
As the weather gets colder, North Atlantic right whales begin their migration to the waters off the Southeastern United States. They usually migrate from North Carolina to Florida to give birth.
With only approximately 380 of the species remaining, every birth is vital for the survival of the endangered species. To keep those numbers growing, safe boating practices are essential.
Right whale calving season spans from November 15 through March but sightings often begin in November. Mothers and their newborns frequently swim close to the shoreline and just below the surface, making them difficult to spot and vulnerable to vessel collisions.
