A Riverhead man will spend decades in prison for shooting and killing his niece’s boyfriend outside a Long Island home after a family fight.
Brent Henry, 61, was sentenced to 25 years to life Friday, Nov. 7, after a Suffolk County jury found him guilty of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
The shooting happened on Aug. 18, 2023, following a pair of confrontations between Henry and 23-year-old Ines Reyes, of East Patchogue, as Daily Voice reported.
The two first got into a fistfight inside the Bellport home that Reyes shared with his girlfriend, who is Henry’s niece. After the argument, Reyes and his girlfriend left and went to a relative’s home on Amsterdam Avenue in East Patchogue.
A short time later, Henry arrived at that home and confronted Reyes again, according to evidence presented at trial. After another brief fight, Henry went to his car, pulled out a .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun, and shot Reyes multiple times in front of his girlfriend, prosecutors said.
Reyes was rushed to Long Island Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Henry was arrested the next day.
“When the defendant senselessly murdered Mr. Reyes, he robbed him of a future,” Tierney said. “We hope that today’s sentence brings a small measure of closure to his loved ones.”
