SALT LAKE CITY — One person was in critical condition Thursday night after he was shot by law enforcement in West Valley City, authorities said.

Supervisory Deputy Mark Thomson with the U.S. Marshal’s Office said the shooting occurred while police were serving an arrest warrant for a “violent fugitive” from St. George. This took place in the area of 3800 S. 5600 West.

When officers made contact at the home, the man allegedly fled from the back of the residence armed with a handgun, according to the West Valley City Police Department.

A task force officer then fired at him, WVCPD said.

The man was hit, and treated at the scene by the task force before being taken to a nearby hospital.

No officers were injured.

Thomson said there was no further threat to the public.
