BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Francisco Garcia had nothing to lose. Convicted of attempted murder and other crimes, a life in prison loomed.

Authorities believe he tried to avoid that by intentionally injuring himself and getting transported to Kern Medical, where he escaped from custody in September, according to newly-released court documents.

Reports filed by sheriff's investigators say Garcia, 22, asked to use the bathroom while at the hospital. One of his handcuffs was removed.

He remained in the bathroom, alone, for 15 minutes.

Afterward, he was re-cuffed and led outside.

As a deputy escorted him to a patrol vehicle, Garcia "suddenly made a quick jolt" then dashed through the parking lot, according to the documents. The deputy and others gave chase, but Garcia got away.
