Northwest Arkansas residents are being cautioned to take steps now to prevent damage to plants or pipes from expected freezing weather over the weekend.

The National Weather Service on Friday morning issued a freeze watch for Benton, Carroll, Crawford, Franklin, Madison, Sebastian and Washington counties from Sunday evening through Monday morning with subfreezing temperatures as low as 20 degrees possible.

"These conditions could kill plants, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing," the alert states.

The Weather Service recommended people take steps before Sunday night to protect tender plants from the cold and prevent water pipes from freezing, such as wrapping them or allowing pipes to drip slowly.
