More than three dozen gold bars seized by police in Bergen County during a February 2024 traffic stop are being auctioned online, with bidding ending early next week.

Bidding started Monday at $19,000, and officials expect the sale to generate about $150,600 for the township of Mahwah.

The 43 one-ounce bars were seized by police during the stop on Route 17 in Mahwah. Two people in the vehicle denied knowing the gold was there, and investigators were unable to determine ownership, according to NorthJersey.com , which cited a police report.

The Mahwah Police Department claimed ownership of the gold after the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office filed forfeiture proceedings in court, the website reported.
