As the federal government shutdown continues and the Trump administration fights court orders to distribute SNAP funding, local governments are stepping up to help those in need.

On Nov. 6, the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners approved $2 million to support food security efforts through the end of the year. The money will aid food banks, food shelves, and food rescue organizations in the county.

In an announcement, Hennepin County says that 110,000 residents receive an average of $180 in SNAP benefits each month. The $2 million in funding is significant, but well short of the federal disbursements typically received each month.
