ALAMOSA, Colo. (KKTV) - The Alamosa Police Department is warning the community about a scam they call the ‘virtual kidnapping scheme.’

Police said that scammers call and claim that a loved one has been kidnapped. They said the victim can sometimes hear screaming or crying in the background of the call.

According to officers, the caller demands a ransom, typically in the form of wired money, and insists that you pay while you are on the phone so that you do not have time to confirm the truth.

Officers say that the success of this type of scheme depends on speed and fear.

The criminals know that they have limited time to get their ransom before the victims find out the truth or the police become involved, police say.
