JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Thousands of veterans are lacing up their running shoes for the Carry Forward 5k in Jacksonville to benefit The Wounded Warrior Project and the services the non-profit provides.
For Newberry Marine Corps veteran Brian Sellers, those benefits were life-changing.
“I went to yell incoming, and I couldn’t talk. I put my hand up to my throat and I just felt blood rushing down my neck,” Sellers recalled.
Sellers was in Iraq in 2004 when he was hit by an enemy rocket. It exploded, sending metal into his neck, shoulder, and thigh. “Felt like this was the end. I couldn’t breathe, couldn’t get air.”
Brian wouldn’t wake up for another three days, and when he did, he was in Germany. He was flown back to the U.S and continued receiving life-saving treatment in Maryland.
