DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) - A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by Iowa college athletes who were investigated for sports betting violations in 2023.

In 2023, several Iowa college athletes were accused of using online gambling apps and faced consequences including criminal charges and NCAA suspension.

The athletes, who played for Iowa, Iowa State and a community college in Iowa, filed the lawsuit claiming law enforcement violated their rights during a sports betting investigation. The players said investigators improperly used geolocating software to track when they used betting apps on their devices near college athletic facilities.

The judge agreed that investigators likely violated the athletes’ rights but ruled that law officers have qualified immunity. Qualified immunity
