Remains of a new mum who was allegedly murdered by a former British soldier were found "significantly decomposed" inside a septic tank, a court has heard.

Ex-soldier Robert James Purkiss appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court today charged with murdering Agnes Wanjiru, 21, during a British Army training exercise in Nanyuki, Kenya in 2012. The court heard Purkiss was deployed to the African nation alongside several others for the six-week exercise between February and April that year, when the group briefly went on leave.
