NEW ORLEANS — Just over a week ago, a category five hurricane devastated Jamaica. Although the island is over 1,000 miles away from New Orleans, a local bakery is pitching in. Bywater Bakery co-owner Alton Osborn says the urge to help was instant.
"We’re humans. Jamaica holds a very special place in our hearts, the culture, the music, the food, the people. It’s an island of beauty and peace. We’ve been a number of times, my wife and I, and I've just fallen in love with the island. We'd do this for any place,' Osborn said.
While Osborn says he and his wife have taken plenty of trips down to the Caribbean, he says loving the country wasn't a prerequisite for their relief efforts.
"The world we live in feels so selfish now, and we all have to do what we can, whenever we can," he said.
