Scientists are increasingly looking at mRNA vaccines for cancer, not just viruses.

The results of a study published in the journal Nature in October showed the promise of mRNA vaccines in fighting cancer.

Lung and skin cancer patients who were undergoing a type of immunotherapy — and who happened to get the COVID vaccine — saw some surprising results.

"Those patients did better than patients who'd been treated in the years before the pandemic, and they did better than patients that had been treated during the pandemic but hadn't gotten their COVID vaccines close to when they started their treatment for their cancer," said Dr. Joshua Veatch , an assistant professor and oncologist at Fred Hutch Cancer Center.
