SEATTLE — The University of Washington soccer community gathered Friday night to honor the life of Mia Hamant , a senior goalkeeper who died Thursday after a seven-month battle with an exceptionally rare form of kidney cancer.
Hamant, 21, was diagnosed with stage 4 SMARCB1-deficient kidney cancer in April. Her diagnosis was only the 14th documented case of its kind.
Her death has left the Husky community grieving the loss of a talented athlete known for her tenacious spirit both on and off the field.
Before Friday night's men's soccer game at Husky Soccer Stadium, players and spectators observed a moment of silence in Hamant's memory. The stadium was filled with photographs of the goalkeeper, serving as reminders of her energy and impact on the program.
