New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is in Puerto Rico this weekend for an annual summit that brings New York’s politicians and lobbyists to sunny San Juan for strategy meetings and workshops.
On Friday, Mamdani handed out hot meals at the Masjid Montehiedra mosque, one of the two mosques in the capital, San Juan, which also has an Islamic weekend school.
The mosque, with a capacity of 400 men and 50 women, was packed for Friday prayers and to welcome the newly elected Muslim mayor.
The Muslim community in Puerto Rico consists mostly of Middle Eastern and Asian immigrants and their descendants. Palestinians make up the majority, residing in large cities like San Juan, Caguas, and Ponce, where they have established Islamic centers and thriving businesses.
Fresh off his election win, Mamdani is the main attraction of the Somos conference, a New York-based organization dedicated to empowering Latino communities.
This year, there are ballroom events billed as “Workforce Development Through Rising Communities” and “Celebrating Human Services Together,” along with a series of legislative workshops.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul, U.S. Rep. Nydia Velázquez, and other city and state officials accompanied by Mamdani.
He's scheduled to return to New York on Saturday.
