A much-anticipated NCAA men’s hockey game lived up to its billing.

Tiernan Shoudy scored in overtime to give the top-ranked Michigan State Spartans a 2-1 win over the No. 3 Penn State Nittany Lions on Friday in East Lansing, Mich.

It was the opener of a back-to-back set between two Big Ten rivals loaded with NHL prospects.

Penn State rookie Gavin McKenna, projected to go first overall in next year’s NHL Draft, scored the lone goal for the visitors.

McKenna, 17, had Penn State and Michigan State as his two final NCAA options before deciding on the Nittany Lions. He has four goals and 10 assists in 11 games.
