WEST LAFAYETTE – In his 41st season on the bench, Oakland coach Greg Kampe knows how to make a more talented team sweat.
Kampe's Golden Grizzlies did that and then some Friday night, hanging around against Purdue for 35 minutes and bothering the Boilermakers throughout with a 1-3-1 zone defense that combined with an ice-cold shooting night to frustrate to no end the No. 1 team in the country.
Braden Smith scored 20 points and added nine assists and seven rebounds to lead the Boilermakers to a shaky 87-77 victory in front of an announced sellout crowd of 14,876 at Mackey Arena. Oscar Cluff added 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting and nine rebounds.
