TOLEDO, Ohio — Four years after promising a major expansion at the Sylvania YMCA/JCC campus, the YMCA of Greater Toledo says it's shifting its focus and its future.
Instead of breaking ground on that long-discussed renovation, the YMCA now plans to open a new branch inside the former L.A. Fitness–Esporta building along Holland-Sylvania, near Central Avenue in Sylvania Township.
From a big promise to a new plan
Back in 2021, Sylvania voters were asked to approve Issue 11, a proposal from the Sylvania Area Joint Recreation District to build a large, taxpayer-funded community center.
At the time, the YMCA said it had its own vision for Sylvania: a multimillion-dollar renovation and expansion of its shared campus with the Jewish Community Center.
Voters ultimately rejected Issue 11. The Y
