BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Inside the Lovelady Center in Birmingham’s East Lake community, more than 600 women and children rely on daily meals as part of their journey toward recovery and stability. Now, those meals could soon be harder to provide.
The center says recent changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, will result in a loss of more than $80,000 a month in food assistance — the equivalent of nearly 2,000 meals every single day.
Frank Long, the Lovelady Center’s development director, said the sudden funding pause has created uncertainty for both staff and residents.
“There’s just a lot of uncertainty. Now ultimately we know that it’s going to get fixed but with the pause on it, it’s just been causing disruptions so we’re asking for peoples help.”
