Democratic leaders say the results of Tuesday’s election in Virginia prove attacking transgender student policies isn’t a winning strategy issue.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Winsome Earle-Sears leaned in hard early against transgender student facility access policies, spending millions on ads painting her opponent as a proponent of trans rights. Democratic Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger said trans student policies should be left up to schools, students and parents.

Other GOP candidates mimicked the message against their opponents. Many of them also lost.
