SUMTER, S.C. — Sumter Police are asking for the public’s help in locating a missing 17-year-old who they say left home Friday evening.

According to the department, Janai Smith was last seen around 7 p.m. on Friday when he left his residence on Masters Drive.

Smith is described as 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing about 155 pounds. Police say he was wearing all black clothing, blue and white Nikes, and carrying a bookbag.

Officers say both investigators and family members are actively working to locate him.

Anyone who sees Smith or knows where he may be is urged to contact the Sumter Police Department at 803-436-2700. In an emergency, call 911.
